The Great Cairn Hut

Great Cairn Mountaineering Trip

July 24-31, 1999

"Look up the word "remote" in the dictionary, and you'll find a picture of the Great Cairn Hut. A trip to this hut seldom puts you in contact with other human beings. Situated on a bench with a "front row seat" for the many moods of Mt. Sir Sandford, and built from stones from the area, the Great Cairn-Benjamin Ferris Hut is one of the most attractive huts the ACC operates, as well as one of the most spectacularly positioned. "

During the last week of July 1999 five of us went to the Great Cairn hut. We flew in and hiked out and explored the area a bit. These pages are complete now.

Summaries

These summaries are mine, as are all opinions expressed in them and/or any factual errors resulting from writing things up months later. Several people kept journals or planned to write articles but nobody has submitted anything to be posted here. - Jim

Planning Archive

Here is some of the e-mail that went out during the planning of the trip, for anyone interested in what was involved or wanting to look back at any of it for some reason. And the preliminary info on safety and the hike out. The archived e-mail is in gzipped tar files.
