Fairy Meadows Ski Trip

March 30 - April 6, 2002

Photo Gallery - April 1

March 30 was fly-in day and we had snowy weather so only did a brief tour, going towards Friendship Col and across to where we could drop into the tree skiing just down Swan Creek from the hut. March 31 it continued to snow and we tree skied all day. Conditions were excellent but accessible terrain was limited.

On April 1 it dawned clear and, as it turned out, cold as well. Being April with a load of new snow I fully anticipated abundant avalanche activity, especially on the South facing slope of Cycle. But we were fortunate and the temperatures remained cold enough to keep the snow in place. On April 1 we made a short tour which stuck to conservative terrain angles while we got a feel for the conditions. We went up the Granite Glacier into the basin below Pioneer Pass.

Climbing the crest of the lateral morraine up the Granite Glacier.
The glacier basin below Pioneer Pass.
Returning down the basin and the excellent turns at its exit, which I think some people took a second run on. Fresh light snow!
Looking across Granite Glacier back towards the hut to Cycle Peak. With new snow and spring sun this is usually very active but with the cold temperatures we saw nothing happening. Fresh light snow plus good stability!

A panorama with Cycle on the right and the Nobility Group of peaks to its left.
