This is the view of Zuckerhutl (3505 m) as the Pfaffensattel is approached. The saddle is to the left and the common route along the east ridge to the summit goes up from there. This was the route of first ascent in 1862 (without any of the Stubai Gletscher development, including the upper section of road). The route is often well traveled with a good boot track these days, although one book indicates crampons and an axe are sometimes needed and the ski touring map shows it with dots to indicate non-ski able scrambling or climbing. On this day the previous weather had been very mixed and there had been no climbers for a while so I had new snow over old frozen icy snow, and crampons or an axe would have been helpful.

The north face, visible here, has a large icefall on it but some people do take their skis to the summit in order to come down this face.
