I had intended to go around the Vogelhutten See to the left of this spot. On the map it is shown as flats along the shoreline. However, the snow came steeply down to the edge of the ice, which was melting. So it was clear that the far side was a much better route. To my right (next photo) there was the ice from the end of the glacier which could be used to cross. But I opted to cross the lake ice at this spot between the sections with water. It's shallow here and some of the ice was solid enough.
